Is Currencies Direct safe and regulated?
Currencies Direct Ltd is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority under reference 900669 and is required to safeguard client funds separately from its own money. As with all payment and electronic money institutions, this is not the same as FSCS protection — there is no £85,000 government guarantee on a currency transfer. You can confirm its status on the FCA Register.
One small note our checks turned up: Currencies Direct states it was “established 1996,” while its Companies House record shows incorporation on 3 April 1995. A minor discrepancy, but we report what the primary sources say rather than smoothing it over.
What Currencies Direct does well
Its standout feature is evidence: 19,331 Trustpilot reviews at 4.8 is the largest review base of any broker in our table. No score here is supported by more customers, which makes the rating more meaningful than a higher score drawn from a few hundred reviews. It provides a dedicated account manager, an app, no fees on most transfers, and both forward contracts and market orders for managing rate risk.
Where Currencies Direct is limited
It does not publish a minimum transfer amount, and it does not publish its exchange rate margin — the number that determines what your transfer actually costs. On a large transfer the margin dwarfs any fee, so “no fees on most transfers” does not by itself make it the cheapest option. Request a live quote and compare it against another broker for the same amount within the same hour.
Frequently asked questions
Is Currencies Direct FCA regulated?
Yes. Currencies Direct Ltd is authorised by the FCA under reference 900669, with client funds safeguarded (not FSCS-protected).
How much does Currencies Direct cost?
It charges no fees on most transfers. Its exchange rate margin — its main source of revenue — is not published, so compare a live quote to judge the true cost.
Is a 4.8 from 19,331 reviews better than a 4.9 from a few hundred?
Arguably yes, on evidence. A slightly lower score backed by nearly 20,000 reviews reflects far more customer experience than a marginally higher score from a small sample.
